Lumbar laminectomy and hemi-laminectomy

The lamina is the part of the posterior ring structure of every vertebra that surrounds the spinal cord or the nerves. A laminectomy is a procedure during which part of this ring is removed to decompress the structures beneath. When there is canal stenosis, this alone is usually sufficient to treat the symptoms. When the symptoms are on one side, the surgery can be minimalised even further by taking off only part of this posterior ring, the “hemi-laminaā€¯.
